Autumn and winter team socials in London
PLANNING · 8 MIN

Treat December as a deadline, not a preference. The Fridays in the first half of December are the hardest slots in the London calendar, November fills while people are still arguing about the date, and no venue in our research publishes a cut-off that will warn you in time. Book earlier than feels necessary, and re-check the season’s figures before you commit.
Why winter fills from the front
Winter socials have a fixed end point and a shrinking number of usable dates. Everyone wants to be finished before the office empties, most companies want a Friday, and a Friday in December is one evening that cannot be duplicated. That is why November and the first half of December go before the rest of the calendar has moved, and why the last week before Christmas is usually a compromise rather than a choice.
The uncomfortable part is that nobody will tell you when it is too late. The research behind this guide records December and Christmas cut-off dates as not found: no venue published a numeric deadline, and the one venue with a Christmas enquiry page publishes no date either. So do not wait for an announcement. Set your own deadline and move before it.
The notice periods that are published are specific rather than general. clueQuest advises getting in touch at least three months before the event if you want customisation or branded items, and holds rooms for up to two weeks pending a deposit that equals the value of a team of three per room. Social Pottery takes a 50% non-refundable booking fee 15 days before the event. Flight Club says weekend slots go quickly, and takes full payment of the gaming fee, a minimum spend and any pre-orders in advance, with no deposit-then-pay-on-the-night option.
A working calendar for a winter social
Work backwards from the date you want, and put the decisions in this order. The months below are a plan rather than a published rule; the notice periods above are the only sourced deadlines.
- September. Agree the date, the total budget and a headcount range. Ask each shortlisted venue for its maximum group size, its wet-weather plan and its cancellation terms in writing.
- Early October. Shortlist three and check the practical details: step-free route, seated capacity, the latest start time and the deposit.
- Mid-October onwards. Send the booking request. On Cultura Club that request authorises your card without charging it, and the venue responds within 24 hours, or instantly if it is connected to our Bookable integration. The card is captured only when the venue accepts.
- Three weeks out. Confirm the headcount and pay any venue deposit. Collect dietary and access needs in one message rather than five.
- One week out. Send a single message with the address, the nearest stations, the start and finish times, what to wear and who to ask on the day.
Dark afternoons change an outdoor plan
By December an outdoor plan is a different proposition from the same plan in June. A walk, a city game or a high-ropes session that reads well on a listing is a cold, dark hour in practice, and the photographs will be of coats. If you want to be outside, put it in the middle of the day, keep it short, and make the indoor fallback explicit rather than implied.
Decide who calls the weather and by when. A venue with a covered space should confirm in writing that it is yours if it rains, and you should know whether your deposit moves with a change of plan. Rescheduling terms vary. Social Pottery corporate bookings can move with 7 days’ notice inside a three-month window, while its Balham public session allows a reschedule up to 48 hours ahead. clueQuest gives no refunds at all and offers a voucher only with at least 14 days’ notice, valid six months and extendable once.
Getting home matters more in the dark. The Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights only, on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria and Windrush lines, with off-peak fares, and a Day Travelcard is valid for journeys starting before 04:30 the next day. A Thursday winter social ends with the normal last train, so check TfL Go or the line PDF for your date rather than trusting memory. Step-free access at Night Tube stations is the same as it is during the day.
Indoor capacity is the real constraint
Once the weather rules out the easy options, your group is competing for indoor rooms with a fixed number of tables. These are the published figures from the research behind this guide, checked in October 2026.
- clueQuest: 74 players per timeslot, around 180 across the venue, largest single space 50. Rooms take 2–7 players, or 4–8 in IAMAI.
- Social Pottery: 4–150 guests in-studio for team events, up to 1000 off-site, with a bespoke corporate minimum of 10 guests.
- Flight Club: groups of 2–36 with 13 semi-private oches at Shoreditch, and 37+ by enquiry.
- Mission: Breakout: the Rat Race package covers 10–18 players.
- London Cookery School: private enquiry bands from fewer than 6 to 30–40 participants.
For a team of three to twenty, self-serve booking covers you. Above twenty the practical move is the concierge team, because the format question becomes a capacity question and the answer changes week by week in December.

Why the price holds on Cultura Club
The listing price is fixed and shown before you submit a request, and it does not change afterwards. The 10% platform fee is charged to the partner rather than added to your price. Cultura Club is not registered for VAT, so no VAT is charged and we cannot issue a VAT invoice.
That matters in December, because the two things that look like a seasonal price rise often are not one. The first is the VAT basis. clueQuest states that its corporate prices include VAT; Mission: Breakout states that its £40 per person package is plus VAT; most other venues in this research do not say. The second is the package. A December food and drink package is a different product from a room with drinks bought on the night, and Flight Club’s £40 per person package carries a 10-guest minimum and has to be paid in advance.
If the social is the company’s annual function, the tax treatment is worth one conversation with finance. HMRC’s guidance on the £150 exemption says that an employer’s annual party or similar annual function for employees is exempt from tax as a benefit if the cost per head does not exceed £150. Two details catch people out. The £150 is not an allowance, so if the function falls outside the exemption the full cost per head is chargeable rather than the excess. And the cost per head includes VAT, transport and overnight accommodation, divided by everyone attending, including non-employees. A one-off event does not qualify, and if you run two or more annual functions the £150 is an aggregate across them.
The alcohol question in December
Winter socials default to drinking more than any other event in the year, which is exactly when the non-drinkers in the group are most visible as an exception. IPPR’s research published on 8 October 2025 found that 73% of UK workers believed employers have a responsibility to reduce alcohol harm. People Management’s coverage of the same Public First survey reported that 40% of workers said all their work social events were centred around alcohol. Choose at least one format where the activity is the point rather than the bar, and put the alcohol-free option in the same place as everything else instead of asking people to request it. The alcohol-free team socials guide has the practical version.
The date is the whole decision
If you take one thing from this guide: decide the date first, and treat December as full until a venue tells you otherwise. Everything else, the format, the menu and the room, is recoverable. The Friday you did not book is not.
Start with team socials in London for the formats that work in the darker months, and food and drink team activities if the meal is the point. Every capacity figure and price here was checked in October 2026, and winter packages move between seasons, so re-check them before you book. If the date has already gone, planning a team day at short notice is a more useful read than a longer shortlist.
